What happens before a workplace grievance?
Organisations usually have processes for workplace grievances, bullying, harassment and misconduct.
But there is a much bigger space that comes before all of those; the everyday behaviours that irritate, undermine, embarrass or disrespect someone, but may not yet justify involving a manager, HR or a formal process.
I think this deserves its own category:
Pre-Grievance Intervention
The idea is simple.
When minor objectionable behaviour occurs, we think teams should have a pre-agreed way to address the issue early, proportionately and directly. To resolve it there and then or escalate later, using the chat app and team + AI review platform, when needed, to resolve their now micro-conflict.
Not every inappropriate comment is bullying. In Australia, for example, Safe Work Australia defines workplace bullying as “repeated unreasonable behaviour.”
Not every objection needs HR or managers to intervene.
But ignoring small problematic behaviours can allow them to repeat, accumulate and eventually become something much harder to resolve, and more expensive to address.
A pre-grievance intervention creates a space between doing nothing and filing a formal incident or grievance.
Under the Spatz framework, that starts with the mildest possible agreed intervention: a simple verbal Caution.
Think of it as tapping your horn when another vehicle gets too close for comfort.
If the behaviour continues or the caution is rejected or ignored, the issue can move through a transparent escalation process using SpatzChat™, eventually reaching the team and AI review if necessary.
The objective is not to eliminate disagreement. We think disagreement is essential.
The objective is to give team members a fair process for addressing problematic behaviour and delivery when disagreement occurs.
Safety, quality and engineering already rely on early intervention because small warning signs matter.
Perhaps workplace behaviour deserves the same thinking.
At SpatzAI, we intend to lead in early pre-grievance intervention, and may already be among the first to define it as a distinct workplace category.
Don’t wait for the grievance. Enable team members to intervene while it is still a pre-grievance.
