It’s Not Conflict, It’s Misaligned Interests

We often hear that teams need better leadership to handle conflict, but I think we’re asking the wrong question. What if the real issue isn’t leadership, but effective decision-making?

“Conflict” is a messy word. It can describe anything from global war to mismatched colors. But when it comes to teams, the most useful way to frame conflict, I believe, is as a “conflict of interests“. That’s where things get personal. When interests misalign enough, emotions rise, and suddenly, we’re not debating ideas, we’re defending egos.

To resolve this, I believe we need to go back to the root: What is the end result we’re trying to achieve? If our shared goal is clear, then we can better align the steps we take to get there. Most tension isn’t about what we want, but how we get there, and specifically how we behave during the process.

When teams skip this clarity, decision-making becomes a minefield. People start “playing the man, not the ball.” But when we’re able to surface those “hidden interests” and realign around outcomes, even tough conversations become productive again.

So instead of calling for stronger leaders to manage conflict, maybe we should focus on building environments where clear, fair decision-making is the norm. Because we’re all decision-makers, not just the ones with the title. And this is where SpatzAI comes in.

In the end, maybe it’s not about avoiding or even resolving conflict, per se. It’s about building a decision-making process that aligns our interests toward a shared outcome. Conflict then becomes less about friction and more about refinement.
