In her influential work on psychological safety, Amy Edmondson highlights the importance of creating an environment where employees feel safe to voice their ideas, questions, and concerns without fear of retribution or humiliation. Edmondson emphasizes that such a culture of respectfulness is vital for fostering innovation, collaboration, and overall team success. However, the mere establishment of a respectful culture is insufficient without concrete measures to address inevitable breaches.
Despite the best efforts to cultivate respect, infractions will occur as predictably as the sun will rise tomorrow. It is not the existence of these infractions but the response to them that truly defines a team’s culture, we believe. Rules and guidelines are essential, but they must be supported by a robust framework for handling violations. Without such mechanisms, the concept of psychological safety remains theoretical and ineffective.
At Spatz we believe this to be the crucial gap in executing psychological safety and to provide a practical solution for when respectfulness is compromised. Our app and platform introduces a structured intervention process designed to address and resolve micro-conflicts in real-time, ensuring that breaches are dealt with constructively and transparently. The SpatzAI approach includes a one-on-one personal approach, and only if required, the use of our three-phase escalation app when necessary: Caution, Objection, and Stop. Each stage aimed at ensuring accountability and promoting resolution and the reduction of uncertainty.
In the initial stage, a team member can issue a verbal caution when experiencing problematic behavior from a coworker or manager. If the caution is challenged or ignored, the offended party can use the SpatzAI app, at an appropriate time, to send an official “Caution,” to document their spat. Should the issue remain unresolved, it escalates to an “Objection,” requiring a simple apology from the offending party. The final stage, “Stop,” involves a team-assisted review process where the conflict is assessed by the team, leading to a heartfelt and acceptable apology for the resolution.
By integrating these measures, SpatzAI ensures that a culture of respectfulness is not just aspirational but actionable. It provides teams with the tools to address infractions effectively, thereby maintaining psychological safety even in the face of inevitable micro-conflicts. This proactive approach is what we believe truly defines a resilient and respectful team culture.
