Cultivate or Innovate?

It seems to me that there are two ways to approach psychological safety in teams,
i.e. how to address objectionable responses in teams, when one speaks up.

They are:

  1. To foster a culture of mutual respect: i.e. Reframing the offending response and retraining managers to be the model behavior example for the team.
    or
  2. To intervene: i.e. Objecting directly and in real-time to the objectionable response.

The first approach has been the standard for the last decade, championed by Amy Edmondson, and is a cornerstone of the multi-billion dollar management consulting industry worldwide. While it can be effective in many respects, this method is expensive and slow to implement, relies heavily on long-term cultural shifts and consistent modeling of ideal behavior by leadership.

The second option, which involves a direct and immediate intervention, requires a simple toolkit.
