Recently, an image of the Buddha, specifically one depicting the abhaya gesture, caught my attention and sparked a realization about the way we communicate, or fail to, in professional settings.
The abhaya mudra, with the right hand raised, palm facing outward, and fingers pointing upwards, is a symbol of objective fearlessness and reassurance. It’s a gesture that conveys protection, peace, and the absence of fear.
Reflecting on this, I couldn’t help but draw parallels with the SpatzAI toolkit I’ve been advocating for in the workplace: the initial act of giving a cautionary warning to a colleague when their behavior may be about to become problematic. This is not about reprimanding or criticizing but rather about offering a gentle reminder to pause and reflect on their behavior and the impact it may be having on the person doing the objecting.
Just as the Buddha’s gesture offers assurance and safety, incorporating a similar approach in our work-life encourages an atmosphere of trust and understanding. It’s about creating a transparent space where everyone feels safe to express oneself, objecting reasonably and fairly to behavior one finds problematic, and resolving our minor spats constructively.
By raising our own right hand as a cautionary warning, one is not only protecting one’s own well-being but also starting to create a culture of accountability and transparency within the team.
*Caution – please refer to the SpatzAI demo video before dismissing the validity of the concept.
